Be Buckfastleigh Make Good Things Happen

Be Wild

Be Buckfastleigh believes in the importance of helping people to appreciate and enjoy the nature around us. Getting close to the natural world helps to invigorate both mind and body! Some examples of the work we have been doing are below.

Hot off the press and ready for the RSPB Big Garden Bird Watch on 29-31 January! Pick up a free bird feeder (limited number available and 1 per household please) and this gorgeous garden bird guide by John Walters from the Be Buckfastleigh Living Room, 55 Fore Street.

Buckfastleigh has the largest, most important, maternity roost for Greater Horseshoe Bats in Europe. Thousands of bats can regularly be seen emerging from the roost and flying out to feed. We give regular free walks from Spring to Autumn to show people the bats and try and encourage the people of town and visitors to treasure this wonderful asset. We have also had a free Buckfastleigh Bat Day with events to celebrate the Greater Horseshoes. The Devon Wildlife Trust has given the town a “Bat Friendly Community” award for its work with bats.

Nature Guides We have worked with local naturalists and enthusiasts to produce guides to some of the wild things that can be found around town. We plan to produce more guides as the year progresses, the seasons cycle and nature changes. Examples of the local guides can be seen here.

As well as encouraging people to look at the nature around us, we have worked on trying to help people to encourage the local flora and fauna. We have worked on projects to distribute free swift boxes and hedgehog huts to the community and produced a guide to making gardens hedgehog friendly.
