Be Buckfastleigh believes in the importance of helping people to appreciate and enjoy the nature around us. Getting close to the natural world helps to invigorate both mind and body!

Buckfastleigh has the largest, most important, maternity roost for Greater Horseshoe Bats in Europe. Thousands of bats can regularly be seen emerging from the roost and flying out to feed. We give regular free walks from Spring to Autumn to show people the bats and try and encourage the people of town and visitors to treasure this wonderful asset. We have also had a free Buckfastleigh Bat Day with events to celebrate the Greater Horseshoes. The Devon Wildlife Trust has given the town a “Bat Friendly Community” award for its work with bats.
