Hello Summer

Well we have got to the end of week 2…..
We had to revise our offerings yesterday due to the terrible weather, but we plan to have those activities back in the programme before the end of the summer.
If you have joined in the activities, please do remember to give us your feedback, you will find a feedback board or sheets for you to complete for each activity.  It is so important that we can evidence to our funders just how well the activities have been received.  That way we get to hopefully get more funding for future events.

It you’ve not joined in with us yet, here is the information.  Come and join in!

The full programme is online and in brochure form around town!
Follow us on Facebook at www.facebook.com/hellosummer to learn all the latest info.

Here’s a bit of background to our project.
Hello Summer is mostly funded by a government grant to provide enriching activities and healthy food to disadvantaged children.
Be Buckfastleigh received this funding for the 73 children in Buckfastleigh who are entitled to free school meals. We also have a grant from Buckfastleigh Town Council, paid for by the people of Buckfastleigh, and a Children in Need grant also for disadvantaged Buckfastleigh children.
Because of the way we run our activities, we are delighted to be able to open them up to all young people in Buckfastleigh, and to welcome visiting children from other places. However, our priority is ALWAYS the disadvantaged young people of Buckfastleigh.
Whilst we are very happy for families from outside Buckfastleigh to attend the free, non bookable workshops, ALL bookable events are reserved for Buckfastleigh children unless otherwise advised.
We are very sorry that some families feel it is unfair that they cannot attend the farm event, or other bookable events, but this was an extremely popular activity and tickets were booked up very quickly for Buckfastleigh children.
If a bookable event is undersubscribed we may open those tickets up to people outside of Buckfastleigh. Please like and follow our Facebook page for the latest information.
We have some excellent free activities everyday which do not need to be booked in advance and we hope that families from around Buckfastleigh enjoy joining us at those.

The full programme is online and in brochure form around town!

Volunteers!

We are specifically looking for some additional volunteers to support Hello Summer.

The activities in the park have been extremely well attended.  It would be great if you have some free time and are able to volunteer with our park team.

If you or you know of anyone who would like to be involved, be it handing out the lunches to supporting the activity teams in the park, we would like to hear from you.

Please get in touch either by messaging the Be Buckfastleigh Facebook page, or email
sara@bebuckfastleigh.co.uk

As they say, many hands make light work!

Cycling

Tomorrow!! Saturday 7 August

The 3rd of the popular BIG BIKE REVIVAL free BIKE BUS CYCLE RIDES this summer. This time the group will set off from HOUND TOR, one of Dartmoor’s iconic granite outcrops with near by ruins of a medieval village.

Free minibus and bike-trailer transport for riders and their bikes up onto Dartmoor National Park. Plus, a short guided talk from an expert on the history and natural environment of the moor.

Some places left on the Bike Bus & cycle ride from Hound Tor. There’ll be a stop at a beautiful Wildflower Meadow and short talk by Richard Knott, Dartmoor National Park Ecologist. And oh yes, the group will stop for a picnic lunch! Dont’ miss out! Weather looking like light and intermittent rain, and if so, the ride will go ahead. Dust down your bike or borrow one! It’s a fun ride in a small group and in one of the most beautiful places. You don’t have to be an expert cyclist!

The cycling will start at Hound Tor with the route going via Harefoot Cross, Hemsworthy Gate and Cold East Cross, joining the Dartmoor Way (NCN272), via Waterleat, Ashburton and return to Buckfastleigh.

The Bike Bus pick ups:

  • approx. 09.00am from South Brent (Palstone Park), and
  • approx. 09.45am from Buckfastleigh (Victoria Woodholme Car Park)

If you would like to be collected in South Brent, please register through Sustainable South Brent.

More details to follow. We hope you can join us for a fun ride! Places are limited. So reserve your place now!

Reserve your place today.

There will be more Big Bike Revival free cycle rides on these dates:

  • Sunday 15 August : South Brent to Ashburton via Buckfastleigh and return. This route has recently been proposed to be developed as a safe, accessible cycle and walk route to connect the Dartmoor gateway towns of Ashburton, Buckfastleigh and South Brent, and importantly to connect to South Dartmoor Community College in Ashburton.
  • Saturday 21 August : Bike Bus transport & Cycle Ride on Dartmoor
  • Sunday 28 August :  e-Bike Led Ride
  • Monday 30 August :  Primrose Trail Ride (Avon Valley). This route has been recently proposed for development as an accessible multi-purpose trail for walkers and cyclists, and is between Kingsbridge and South Brent, following where possible the route of the old Primrose Line railway.

Guided Walk Around Hembury Wood – Monday 9 August

We’ve another opportunity to meet up with renowned entomologist Malcolm Scoble next Monday 9 August, 11am for a free guided walk around Hembury Fort. Malcolm is an absolute expert on butterflies and moths, and with a bit of luck, Hembury will be full of them! Grab a free guide leaflet from the Living Room and join us on Monday. Parking is very limited so please park with consideration or come by bike.

Swimming

The summer timetable is out now – Click the picture left for a larger copy.

We will be maintaining our covid protection measures but will increase the number of people allowed on site to 40. That still leaves plenty of room to maintain distance between swimmers and poolside.
Please note that we are NOT running a BOOKING SYSTEM – it is simply turn up and swim.
Changing rooms will remain out of use so please come swim ready. Our tuck shop is also staying closed for now and we ask customers to wear a mask in reception.
Watch this page for any timetable changes and the upcoming holiday timetable.
